A tourist visiting the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, Kansas, got an unexpected brush with Old West justice when he decided to pose for a picture with the noose dangling from the Hanging Tree display. The 69-year-old visitor from Parks, Arkansas, saw that the noose had somehow fallen from its usual position (15 feet in the air) to a manageable distance, so he hopped into the display, looped the noose around his neck, and posed for some pictures. Then, somehow, the noose tightened and the man passed out, hanging himself from the museum display.
Miraculously, the man survived his harrowing ordeal, thanks to the quick efforts of museum staff and the man’s two traveling companions. The display had been in place for 63 years without incident before now, and museum staff have no clue how the noose dropped down to a level where the man could try it on for size.
