Easter Bunny To Be Crucified

Somewhere, Elmer Fudd is smiling...

IT sounds like something out of a horror film. Professional artist Ian Moir is set to turn Easter in Edinburgh into a nightmare by parading a dead rabbit through the streets before crucifying its lifeless body on a cross.

The 33-year-old is planning the macabre performance for Good Friday and wants to highlight what he sees as the "crass commercialisation of Christmas and Easter" by re-enacting the crucifixion.

Passers-by will see the dead animal, animated like a puppet on strings, paraded by Mr Moir, who will be dressed as a jester and will have his face covered by a golden theatrical mask.

[...]

"Although I am not a Christian, I still find myself repulsed by the rampant commercialism that goes on," [Mr. Moir said.]

Father Michael Henesy, parish priest at St Patrick's Church in the Old Town, said: "I think it will offend a lot of people. It's trivialising the crucifixion."

A spokeswoman for animal rights charity Peta added: "Truly creative artists do not rely on cheap gimmicks to generate interest in their work. Using the corpse of an innocent rabbit does nothing to encourage reflection about Jesus's message of love and compassion."
